Consumer

Altered Melon is a unisex snowboarding line created for winter 2019. The melon grab is located between your front feet on your board, in correlation, this line is designed for a consumer in a midway place in life. Between the ages of 18 and 30, they aren't absolutely sure what they want in life and are more interested in living in the moment. They are a snowboarder, skateboarder, and all around thrill seeker who loves trying new things and taking risks. This line is designed to give them more options in their snow-wear and to bring in new elements they're not used to seeing.

Conceptually, sacred geometry and symmetry found in nature are a prominent idea conveyed in the designs. Mainly the idea that although the Golden Mean is seen as a perfect ratio, it doesn't necessarily mean it is symmetrical. Other than sacred geometry, reflection and asymmetric shapes also play a role in the line.

Production

The production concept is meant to convey how each piece is adaptable while on the mountain. For each different type of snowboarding grab, the consumer needs a different range of movements. Some grabs cause the rider to crouch where they will need more room in their pants whereas others need room in the arms to reach behind their back. These designs are meant to be transitional so the rider doesn't need more than one change of clothes to do different tricks and runs.

Color Story

This line brings colors not usually seen in snowboarding or winter apparel into the mix. Inspired by the transition from fall to winter, jewel tones were the primary colors chosen. They are colors not seen in these apparels today and bring a modernism to the line with a fresh color selection.

Pattern Concept

The pattern concept is based on aerial photography. The farm landscapes make a modern camo and the garden located in Singapore creates a snowflake pattern. I was also inspired by trains and railways and how the lines looked solid, but when you get close you can see it's actually separate cars creating a dotted line.

From this concept, 3 patterns were created. An oversized camo and railway-inspired plaid are repeat patterns while the snowflake is a print.

Fabrics

The fabrics chosen for this line are all functioning in a way to create comfort for the rider. The first three are fabrics are windproof, breathable, waterproof, and abrasion resistant for the outer jacket and snowboarding bibs. Next is a fleece knit for the thermal layers and the sherpa is an aprés textile. Reflective can be used for piping so the rider is seen. Neoprene is being used more and more in sportswear and is a great base-layer fabric. Twill and Taslan are used for the lining and mesh is also incorporated to wick away moisture to keep the rider warm. The jersey also has wicking capabilities.

For my base-layers I created both a thermal pant and hooded long-sleeve shirt. The hoodie has abrasion resistant material on the hood, sleeves, and cuff because those are high- friction areas. The Crail Hoodie also features a hood that pulls into a face mask so the rider has one less item to bring with them. The Slob Oversized T-Shirt is made completely out of abrasion resistant material to be worn over the hoodie in the Spring for less bulk and less rips in the material.

My line is unisex but I wanted to include two gender specific jackets of the same function. The Shaun Cross Rocket Reversible Jacket is named after Shaun White, a 3-time Olympic meddler, and is lined with a sherpa knit to be an aprés look for the lodge. There is a zipper on the elbow of this jacket to give more room in the arms. The Chloe Cross Rocket is named after Chloe Kim who is the youngest woman to land back to back 1080's. It is a puffer jacket that is quilted and when worn reversed, the lapels hide the zipper.

My outer-layers include an asymmetric jacket and snowboarding bibs. The Method Jacket includes 5 exterior pockets, a mesh pocket inside, and a pocket with a waterproof plastic that you can touch your phone through. There is also a headphone hole located on the bottom of the pocket so you don't have to put your phone in upside-down. The Seatbelt Snowboarding Bibs fold down if the rider gets hot or needs more movement in their pants. The pocket is double sided so it acts as a hand warmer when worn in the alternate position. In partnership with Lib Tech, there are snowboards offered with not only custom prints, but a completely custom board. Each rider can choose their specific rocker, camber, and flex to have a board completely unique to them and their riding style.
