MOKSEONG NUN (JUPITER EYE)

Consumer

Mokseong Nun (meaning Jupiter Eye) is a collection designed for the artistic Asian-American woman who is always on the move and trying new things. Age 25-30, she makes between $50k and $70k a year as a graphic designer and artist. She has noticed that Asian influences very rarely make appearances in Western fashion and wants clothing that shows her heritage.

Concept

My concept is a scientific study called the body comparative: when parts of the body are pictured side by side with a similar structure in nature. I mainly focused on the comparison of irises and nebulas in how each one is completely unique in color and shape.

Color Story

With my reference to Asian culture, I wanted to use traditional colors from Chinese artwork rather than the "Neon Tokyo" colors of the big cities. I focused on more muted and earthy tones with lilac and orange accents. Each color is named after a planet, in Korea they have no word for planet so instead they use star of... (for example Mars is Star of Fire).

Fabrics

My fabric choices were driven by the textiles the come from Asia, like their beautiful brocades and ikat weaving. All of my fabrics have a type of luster, most of them being satin, to capture the sheen seen in traditional kimonos and ceremonial dress. To bring the garments into the streetwear realm, I created a few bold patterns and prints to be used with the lustrous fabric.

Prints and Patterns

When designing my prints for this line I wanted to focus on two things: eyes and the zodiac. Most of the prints will relate to the eye in an abstract way while the screen print and embroidery will take note from the Chinese Zodiac, as these star signs are meant to impact a person's personality and spirituality.

Looks 1 and 2

For the first look, the cropped hoodie reflects the Jeogori silhouette of a woman's jacket in Korea, it will be laser etched with words that read "Star of Tears".

The pants will feature a paperbag waist and hand painted abstract eye design.

For look 2, a top with a traditional wrap will be made of the space eye digital print which will also be accents on the cuffs and pockets of the Baji-inspired jeans.

The jacket will be quilted in reflection of the veins that make up a Perilla leaf, which is among the mint family grown in Asia.

Looks 3 and 4

Look 3 consists of a gathered shirt-dress in the engineered faux-shibori print with a traditional mandarin collar.

The jacket is upcycled from vintage Levi's and the back is a hand-woven textile of chiffon scraps.

Look 4 has the zodiac screen print for the Year of the Ox. It also features couched braids along the kimono sleeves to signify the structure of a tree trunk and the spine.

The joggers are a hammered satin featuring mesh panels beaded with small "planets".
